Had a heated chat with my book club about an unreliable narrator
Last month at our library meeting, I brought up how the narrator in 'Gone Girl' was totally unreliable and Maria, this older lady in our group, got super defensive. She kept saying the narrator was just being honest about her feelings, even when the text clearly showed she was lying about key facts. I pointed out a specific scene where she contradicts herself within two paragraphs, and Maria just crossed her arms and said I was overthinking it. After the meeting, she told me I ruin books by treating them like puzzles instead of stories. It really stuck with me because I thought discussing narrative tricks was part of the whole point of a book club. Has anyone else had a disagreement over narrator reliability that got way too personal?
