Why does nobody talk about how book clubs skip the actual debate part?

I've been in three different book clubs over the last 5 years and every single one turns into a 45 minute chat about the author's personal life or what we ate that week. Last month we read "Where the Crawdads Sing" and the whole meeting was 38 minutes of people talking about their childhood vacations near marshes. Nobody brought up the actual court case structure or whether the ending was fair. I called it out once and got three blank stares. Has anyone else dealt with groups that just refuse to tackle the real arguments in a book?

I finally finished 'The Power Broker' after 4 months of struggle

I started this book back in April thinking it would take me maybe three weeks. But Caro's writing is so dense with names and places that I kept having to stop and look things up. Plus the book is 1,200 pages which is basically its own city. I finally wrapped it up last Tuesday and it took me 18 weeks total. My book club has been laughing at me because we switched topics twice since I started. Has anyone else spent way longer than expected on a single book for your group?

So our club has been arguing for weeks about whether the main character in 'The Nightingale' was selfish or heroic. I've been dug in on the heroic side but kept getting shouted down. I was in a book club meetup at a coffee shop in Portland about 6 months ago. This woman in her 50s kept saying fantasy novels are just childish escapism and not real literature. She said it right after I recommended The Name of the Wind, which I think has some of the best prose I've ever read. Unpopular opinion: my book club friend told me to stop dog-earing pages and use sticky tabs instead

She said I was ruining the spine and making the book look beat up. I ignored her for like 3 months, kept folding corners. Then I tried those little Post-it flags on a library copy of "Project Hail Mary" and yeah, she was right. The pages lay flat now and I don't lose my spot. I grabbed the Pevear and Volokhonsky version off my shelf and the old Constance Garnett from the library. Garnett had Raskolnikov sounding like a stiff Victorian gentleman and the modern one actually made him sound like a desperate guy losing his mind. I was at a Borders in Austin when someone suggested we all read 'Twilight' and a woman spent 45 minutes arguing Edward was an angel not a vampire. The moderator just let her go on and on. Since then I always ask for a strict time limit on each person before I join any new club. Has anyone else had a meeting derailed by one person's weird obsession?
