What do you do about hotels or places to stay though? I tried the last minute flight thing once and ended up stuck because every decent, affordable room was booked solid. The flight was cheap but I paid way more for a bad hotel or had to stay farther out. It feels like you need to have a backup plan for lodging before you even buy the ticket, which kills some of the spontaneity.

Totally agree with that. Saw what @keithbutler said about kimonos and it just makes sense. Good design should be smart, not obvious. Hiding a pocket in a seam is just clever problem solving. It’s like a little secret for your stuff.
