Vent: My brother told me to skip the enclosed trailer and just drive my car 1,800 miles, now I'm second guessing everything
My brother called me up a few days ago after I told him I was getting quotes to ship my 2006 Mustang from Austin to Portland, and he laughed at me. He said he drove his Camaro from Dallas to Seattle himself a couple years back and saved over $1,200, so why would I pay someone to haul mine. I tried to explain that the car has 140,000 miles on it and I really don't want to add another 1,800, but he kept going on about how road trips are half the fun. Now I'm sitting here with three shipping quotes in my inbox wondering if I'm just being paranoid about wear and tear. Has anyone here actually done the long drive instead of shipping and regretted it?
Did you see that post on the Mustang forums about the guy who drove his 2005 GT from Phoenix to Chicago and blew a head gasket in Kansas? He ended up stuck in some tiny town for four days and paid way more than shipping would have cost. I read something similar on Reddit where a guy said the heat and constant highway speeds at 140k miles can cook old gaskets and hoses that were hanging on fine for short trips. Your brother's Camaro might have been in better shape or just got lucky. With that many miles on yours, one breakdown in the middle of nowhere could wreck your whole budget. What kind of shape is the cooling system in right now?
