Raised beds vs. ground planting on my clay soil

I started my veggie patch two years ago and went straight into the ground with tomatoes and beans. Last spring I built two raised beds, 4 feet by 8 feet, and filled them with a mix of compost and topsoil. The difference in growth was night and day, the raised bed tomatoes produced almost twice as many fruits. Has anyone else had better luck with raised beds on heavy clay?

TIL my cheap scale was off by 3 grams this whole time

I've been using this $12 kitchen scale for like 4 years now. Decided to test it with a calibration weight from a friend who roasts beans. Turns out it was reading 18 grams when I put 15 grams on it. No wonder my pour overs have been tasting kind of inconsistent lately. Picked up a decent Jennings scale at a restaurant supply store for $40. First cup this morning was way better. Anybody else ever find out their gear was just wrong the whole time?

Should we pre-finish before assembly or after? I've had it go both ways.

Last month at Jensen's Shop in Portland, I did a big kitchen job where I finished all the panels before assembly. But three years ago on a similar job in Eugene, I got weird glue seepage that wrecked the finish on two doors. The pre-finish crowd says it's cleaner, but the after crowd says you get better seams. What's your take on which method holds up better over time?

Vent: My microwave popcorn routine is way slower now and I don't care

I used to nuke a bag for 2 minutes flat like everyone else, but now I do it stovetop in a pot with oil - takes almost 10 minutes but tastes ten times better. Anyone else ditch the microwave method even though it takes longer?

PSA: That talk with the old surveyor changed how I check elevations

Was on a site last week in Greenville and this 60-year-old surveyor named Gene pulled me aside. He said I was relying too much on the digital readout and not checking my benchmark against the actual curb. He showed me how a 0.3 degree tilt in the rod throws off a whole slab pour. Has anyone else had an old timer point out a bad habit you didn't even know you had?

My "deep POV" attempt at a writing prompt fell flat on its face last night

I was trying to write from the prompt "describe a room through the eyes of someone who just lost everything" and I thought I was being so clever with the deep point of view... lots of sensory details, stuffy air, dust motes. But I got so caught up in describing the empty picture frames on the wall that I completely forgot to actually make it feel sad. My writing group called me out on it. One person said "this reads like a real estate listing." Ugh. So I rewrote it focusing on just one object - a single coffee mug in the sink with lipstick on the rim. That did the trick. Has anyone else had a prompt totally backfire on them like that?

That one comment about my lamp shades made me ditch the whole booth layout

Some lady at the flea market in Portland told me my lamps were blinding her and she couldn't even look at my other stuff. Swapped to soft white bulbs and angled the shades down, and suddenly I'm selling 3 lamps per Sunday instead of 1. Has anyone else had a customer's random gripe totally fix their setup?

That old foreman who swore by leaving slack on every drop

Back in 2008, my first foreman, Mike, kept telling me to leave at least 3 feet of service loop on every residential drop, even if it seemed like overkill. Last month I had to go back to a house I wired in 2010 and that extra slack saved me from having to run a whole new line when they moved the TV 2 rooms over. Anyone else have an old timer's advice that actually held up years later?

Lady tried to return a half-eaten sandwich at the grocery deli I work at in Phoenix

So I'm working the customer service desk at a Fry's in Phoenix last Tuesday and this woman walks up with a sub sandwich that's clearly been bitten into like three times. She says 'this tastes off' and wants a full refund. I'm like ma'am you ate half of it. She argues with me for a solid 10 minutes saying it's 'food safety' and I just stood there holding the damn thing. Manager came over and gave her store credit just to get her out the door. Has anyone else had people try to return obviously used food at your store?

That day I lost power for 72 hours during a heatwave was oddly the best week I had all summer

Last July we had a nasty storm roll through our neighborhood in Nashville and knocked the power out for three full days. Most folks in the chatter lounge were posting about generators and portable AC units, but I actually ended up enjoying it. Without the TV and internet, my wife and I sat on the porch reading books by candlelight and actually talked to each other without phones in our hands. The neighbors all came out and we had this block party vibe with everyone sharing food from their grills before it spoiled. I honestly slept better with the windows open and just a fan running, even though it hit 92 degrees inside. The third morning I woke up to birds chirping instead of an alarm and realized I hadn't felt that calm in years. Anyone else ever had a power outage turn into something you wished would last longer?
