Chose the 45 minute backroad detour over sitting on I-95 near Richmond, and I'm still not sure I won
Last Tuesday I hit brake lights for miles outside Richmond and had to pick between crawling the highway or taking a two lane backroad my GPS said would add 45 minutes. I picked the backroad, then got stuck behind a tractor doing 12 mph and a train at a crossing for 20 minutes anyway. Does anyone actually trust the alternate route when their phone offers it, or do you just sit in the mess like a normal person?
Ugh, I feel this in my soul. The thing to check is whether the backroad detour actually goes somewhere useful or just dumps you back on the same highway a few exits later, because if it rejoins the interstate, you're just inheriting whatever backup caused the original jam. My rule is only take the alternate if it's a state route with actual traffic lights and towns, not a farm road, since farm roads are where tractors and trains live. Waze and Google both know about the crossing delays if enough people report them, but nobody reports a tractor puttering along at 12 mph.
