Paid $500 for a tenant dispute lawyer and it saved my deposit

I rented a place in San Diego for 3 years and the landlord tried to keep my full deposit for normal wear and tear. Got a lawyer through the California Tenant Protection Network for a flat $500 fee. They sent one letter citing CA civil code 1950.5 and suddenly the landlord caved. Got back $2,800 after they tried to claim new carpet was my fault. Anyone else deal with shady deposit deductions in CA?

Was at Ace Hardware in Portland last week grabbing more paint for my living room. Old dude stocking shelves saw me struggling to pry open a gallon can with a screwdriver and showed me this simple trick. He tapped the putty knife on the edge of the lid all around, and the cap popped right off without bending. No more dented lids or paint splatter on my jeans. Has anyone else got a workaround for those stuck paint lids that actually works?

He's been in HR for like 20 years. Told me loyalty just gets you a 2% raise while jumping ships gets you 15-20%. I stayed at my first job for 4 years because I liked the team. Got a 3% raise. Friend who started same time as me left after 18 months, now makes $12k more than me. Is that really the only way to move up now or are there companies that actually reward staying?
