Watched a picker set up on a slight grade in Tacoma, now I check the bubble level twice
Saw a guy in Tacoma last month set his outriggers on what looked flat and the bubble was off just a hair. He caught it before the lift, but it stuck with me. Now I check my level twice before every pick. What's your pre-lift walkaround routine look like?
Man, I gotta say I see it the other way. Checking the bubble twice is fine but that ain't what saves you out there. The level can read dead on and you still got soft ground under one outrigger just waiting to sink once the load comes up. I've watched guys stare at that bubble like it's gospel and never once look at what the pads are actually sitting on. Give me a guy who walks the whole setup and kicks at the dirt over a guy who checks the level five times. Tacoma has a ton of fill dirt and old gravel lots that look solid until you put weight on them. So yeah check the bubble, but don't let it make you feel safe when the real problem is six inches under your outrigger pad.
