Hit 1,000 completed service tickets last week and it made me realize something about how I work

I kept a log since 2022 and when I hit that 1,000th ticker it hit me that I've probably spent more time untangling cable nests than actually fixing computers, has anyone else tracked their ticket count and noticed a weird pattern in what you actually do all day?

Sat next to a retired trucker at a diner and he explained why I keep getting brake checked

I was eating breakfast at a Love's off I-40 last Tuesday and this older guy, 50+ years hauling, told me my following distance looks fine to me but looks like tailgating from a big rig because they see over my car. He said if I can't see both their side mirrors in my windshield, they can't see me at all. Never heard that before but tried it on the drive home and nobody flashed their hazards at me once. Anyone else get advice from a stranger that actually fixed a driving habit?

Hit 50,000 miles on my Prius this morning and the engine light finally turned off

Was dreading the commute on I-35 when I noticed the check engine light that had been on for 6 months just went out at exactly 50,001 miles. Anyone else have a car that fixes itself at random milestones?

Can We Talk About The $150 I Just Threw Away On A Bluetooth Speaker?

I was at Best Buy last Saturday and fell for one of those fancy portable speakers with all the hype. Paid $150 for it because the box said it had 20 hours of battery life and deep bass. First day, it sounded fine, but by day three the battery barely lasted 4 hours. I tried to return it and they said I needed the original packaging, which I had already tossed. Now it sits in my drawer playing music for maybe 45 minutes before dying. Anyone else get burned by a big box store return policy like this?

Just spent an hour fixing a shutter that was "totally dead" and it was just a corroded battery terminal

Some guy brought in a Canon AE-1 last week at the diner where I pick up my takeout, said the shutter was completely locked up and he wanted to sell it for parts. I took a look for $20 just out of curiosity, and sure enough the shutter wouldn't fire at all. Popped the bottom plate off and saw the battery contact was green with corrosion. Hit it with some vinegar and a q-tip, cleaned it up, put in a fresh battery, and the thing works perfectly now. He looked kinda dumb when I handed it back working. People write off old cameras way too fast without checking the simple stuff first. Anyone else run into a camera that just needed a basic cleaning before it worked fine?

Froth vs No Froth: Am I just making hot milk look fancy?

I spent 3 years frothing my oat milk every single morning until I went to a buddy's place and he just poured cold milk straight into his black coffee. I couldn't tell the difference in taste, but he claimed the cold milk gave it a cleaner finish. Does the froth actually change the flavor or is it just for the aesthetic?

Tried writing with a fountain pen for my short story and it completely changed my pacing

I picked up a cheap Lamy Safari last week after seeing a post about slowing down your writing process. I'm working on a short story set in the 1920s and thought using a fountain pen would help me get in the right mindset. What I didn't expect was how much slower I wrote, like maybe half my normal speed on a keyboard. The ink smudged twice and my handwriting is terrible, but the story ended up being way tighter because I had to think before every sentence. I usually crank out 500 words in 20 minutes on a laptop, but with the pen I did 200 words in 45 minutes and they actually made sense. Has anyone else tried switching tools to change how they write, like going from digital to paper or using a typewriter?

Used to post my digital art flat with no process pics big mistake

For 3 years I just uploaded the final polished piece. Then last month I started including my initial rough sketch layers and a 10 second speedpaint clip. My engagement jumped from like 12 likes to over 60 on my last piece. Has anyone else noticed people respond way more to seeing the messy middle stages?

Hit 50,000 bricks laid in a single year - didn't think that was possible

I've been tracking my daily counts since January and I just passed 50,000 bricks laid for the year yesterday on a job in Manchester. That's way more than I thought I could do by myself working solo. Has anyone else hit a number like this and felt surprised by what you can pull off?

Warning: $90 on an Amazon cheap air filter ruined my HVAC unit in 6 months

Wait, is that what happened to my unit last summer? I thought I was just cursed with bad luck, but now I'm wondering if my 4-pack from some random brand did me in too. I had a similar issue where the AC just stopped keeping up, and the repair guy pulled out a filter that looked like it was from a 90s dust bunny convention - all fluffy but not catching anything real. I'm pretty sure I spent more on the energy bill from the unit working overtime than the filter savings were worth. Spent 4 hours installing a smart thermostat because my HVAC is from 1989

Hope you took a picture before you touched anything. That sounds like someone messed with the color coding decades ago and nobody ever fixed it. You probably got lucky - most old furnaces are pretty forgiving as long as you match the terminals right. But that green wire doing nothing is a pretty big red flag, could be a grounding issue or a hack job someone did. I'd check the voltage on that thing before winter hits hard, just saying.

Tried leaving a polite note on a bad parker's windshield, got screamed at instead

Haven't you ever accidentally parked a little crooked after a long day and just wanted to grab your stuff quick, no harm meant? A note on a windshield feels like a shot in the dark, and people get real hostile when they feel judged without warning (especially in a Walmart lot). Honestly, if someone left a note on my car without seeing me struggle through traffic first, I'd probably be steamed too.

I think air fryers are overrated and here's why

Air fryers definitely need some trial and error to get right. Lowering the temp by 25 degrees helped me too, but I also found that not crowding the basket was key. I actually prefer the air fryer over my oven for smaller meals, it heats up way faster and the texture on veggies is way better. My chicken comes out juicier than my oven ever did, maybe it's a moisture issue with your marinade or brine. Different strokes I guess, the oven has its place but I'm sticking with my air fryer for most weeknight dinners.

I finally figured out why my brake calipers kept sticking on one side

That brake hose acting like a one-way valve is a real pain... I've seen it a few times on older trucks where the rubber just gives up over time. For the caliper slides, I always pull them out and wire brush them with a little brake grease if there's any rust. Just keep an eye on the brake feel over the next few weeks and you'll know if it was really just the hose.
