Just realized I was overpaying for property tax estimates on potential buys

I used to just take the city's online figure at face value, but after getting burned on a Corktown lot last fall, I started calling the assessor's office directly for the 'true cash value' breakdown. Anyone else have a better method for getting accurate numbers before making an offer?

Pro tip: A bad day at the Heritage Mill job site made me change how I set up my saw horses

I was working on a deck rebuild in the rain, and my old metal horses were on uneven ground. One leg sank, and my circular saw slid off a 2x10, taking a chunk out of the board. Now I always carry a small level and a bag of gravel in my truck to pack under the feet before I set anything down. What's your go-to method for keeping a work surface solid on soft ground?

I was at a potluck in Portland last month and my friend Mark, who just got back from South Korea, told me he learned to add a little bit of blended pear to his kimchi paste. He said a woman at a market in Busan told him it helps kickstart the fermentation and adds a subtle sweetness. I tried it with my last batch and it really did get bubbly faster, maybe a full day sooner. Has anyone else tried adding fruit to their kimchi brine?

TIL my shop's 12-valve Cummins rebuild hit 900,000 miles on the original bottom end

We just pulled the head on a '94 Dodge for a customer, and the cross-hatching was still visible in the cylinders. It made me think, is this just a freak engine or are we too quick to tear into things that still have life? I've seen guys rebuild at 500k just because 'it's time'. What's the highest mileage you've seen on a stock bottom end before a teardown?

My surface finish went from rough to mirror smooth after I switched to a 0.5mm corner radius tool

I was running a job on 6061 aluminum for a customer, making some small brackets. The finish on the vertical walls was always a bit streaky, no matter how I tweaked the speeds and feeds. This went on for about two weeks. I was using a standard 3-flute flat end mill. On a whim, I swapped to a tool with a 0.5mm corner radius, kept everything else the same. The difference was instant on the next part. The tool just seemed to slice through the material cleaner, leaving a finish that almost looked polished. I think the small radius helps distribute the cutting force and reduces chatter. It's now my go-to for finishing passes on aluminum. Has anyone else found a specific tool geometry that made a huge difference like this?

I was charging $50 an hour for web design and couldn't figure out why I was broke.

My client in Austin asked for a detailed invoice, and when I added up the actual hours I spent on emails, calls, and revisions, I was only billing for about 15 hours of a 40-hour week. The rest was unpaid admin work that I never counted. How do you track and price all that hidden time so you actually make a living wage?

The chatter lounge at my local library went from empty to packed in under a year

Last spring, the weekly meetup in the community room had maybe 5 regulars, but now it's consistently 20+ people every Thursday. The library started promoting it on their social media and partnered with a board game cafe to bring in games. Has anyone else seen a quiet local spot suddenly get popular like that?

PSA: I used to think the community garden on Elm Street was just for looks.

I walked by it today and saw they have a little sign up now with a number for free starter seeds. I grabbed a packet of basil and some green beans, and the lady there said they have a volunteer hour every Saturday at 10 AM. Has anyone else checked out a local spot like this that turned out to be more useful than you thought?
