Had the best weld day of my life on Tuesday, then Wednesday kicked my teeth in
Tuesday every rod ran clean and the X-ray came back 100 percent on 14 joints, but Wednesday I chased porosity on the same machine for six hours and the inspector just shook his head. Do you blame the machine, the rod lot, or just chalk it up to the weather changing? Trying to figure out if I'm the only one who gets those wild swings.
Sounds like you already answered your own question and just want someone to say it aint your fault. Chasing porosity for six hours on the same rig that ran clean the day before tells me something changed overnight, and it aint your hands. Rod lot is the first thing I'd check, pull a few out of the box and look at the flux, then check your gas flow and make sure nobody messed with the regulator between shifts. Weather can mess with you too, humidity gets into the rod and the gas line and everything goes soft on you. But chasing the same porosity for six hours without stopping to change one thing at a time is where I'd push back on you, you gotta break the loop instead of just welding harder. Run a test bead on scrap, swap the rod, then swap the gas, and find out what actually moves the needle instead of guessing.
