Got hit with a $350 fee for a tiny balcony fire pit in Sacramento

I bought one of those little solo stoves for my apartment balcony, the small one. Thought it was fine since it was raised off the wood deck. After three uses my downstairs neighbor complained about smoke getting in her window. Landlord sent a warning, then the city fire inspector showed up and slapped me with a $350 citation for violating the open flame rule in multi-unit buildings. I even called the fire department beforehand and they said it was okay, but the written code says something different. Has anyone else dealt with conflicting info from city officials on stuff like this?

Paid $500 for a lawyer to look at a parking ticket and got nothing out of it

I got a parking ticket in downtown LA last year for $65, but I thought I had a good reason to fight it. There was a faded sign and I was sure I was in the clear, so I hired a lawyer who specialized in traffic stuff. He charged me $500 upfront, said he'd handle everything and get it dismissed. Long story short, he sent one letter, the city didn't budge, and he told me to just pay the ticket. So I wasted $500 plus the $65, and learned that some lawyers will take your money for easy cases they know they can't win. Has anyone else gotten burned by a lawyer for something small like this?

Neighbor claimed prop 47 is why stores lock up everything, I think it's more complicated

I overheard a guy at the coffee shop in Santa Monica blaming prop 47 for every locked shelf at CVS, but I feel like that ignores how online theft rings and corporate loss prevention policies have changed since 2020. He didn't mention the actual theft data from the California Board of State and Community Corrections that shows retail crime rates are mixed across counties, not a straight line up. Has anyone else looked into the actual numbers from the 2023 report and found something different?

My landlord tried to charge me $2,000 for normal wear and tear

Moved out of my apartment in San Diego last month after 3 years there. Landlord kept my full security deposit of $2,000 and sent me a list of charges that included repainting the whole place and replacing the carpet. That client meeting in Santa Ana where I forgot the evidence binder

I drove all the way to a client meeting near the Santa Ana courthouse last Tuesday and realized I left the evidence binder on my kitchen table. The client was already waiting in the lobby and I had maybe 10 minutes to figure it out. I ended up pulling the key documents from my email onto my phone and talked through them on speaker while taking notes on a napkin. The judge actually let us proceed because I had the digital copies ready. Has anyone else had to scramble like that for a hearing and found a workaround that saved them?.

Finally stopped doing my own will after watching a friend's estate go sideways

I used to just write up my own will using a template I found online. Figured it was good enough since I don't have much property or money. But after seeing my buddy's family spend 8 months in probate court in Sacramento because he didn't sign it with the right witnesses, I realized how dumb that was. I paid a local lawyer $300 last month to do it proper with notary and all. Now I sleep better knowing it'll actually hold up if something happens. Has anyone else here had a homemade will backfire on them?

My tax guy told me to ignore the IRS notice and he was dead wrong

Back in 2021 my CPA in San Diego said a notice from the IRS about unreported income was just a form letter and to toss it. I followed his advice and six months later they took $1,800 out of my bank account without warning. Turns out a side gig I did for a friend's company in Chula Vista got reported to the IRS but never put on my return. Had to pay a penalty on top of the tax owed because I missed the response window. The clerk told me that if the total value is under $184,500, you can use a small estate affidavit instead of full probate. I almost spent $3,000 on a lawyer before she pointed that out. My neighbor the paralegal gave me bad advice about small claims court limits

Last March I had a dispute with a contractor over a $8,500 patio job. My neighbor said small claims in California caps at $10,000 so go ahead. I filed and got to court only to learn the limit for businesses is actually $6,500. I had to drop the case and refile in regular court which cost me an extra $350 in filing fees. Can we talk about that one clerk at the courthouse who actually walked me through filing a small claims form

I was at the San Diego courthouse last Tuesday totally lost on how to file a response form. This older lady behind the counter saw me staring at the instructions for 10 minutes and just came around to help. She pointed to line 7 and said "start here, ignore everything above that." Saved me from messing up the whole thing. Has anyone else had a clerk go way beyond their job to help out?

Paid the fine, then found out my neighbor fought the exact same ticket and won with a photo of the sign blocked by a tree branch, so now I'm kicking myself.

My neighbor's restraining order got modified in 3 days after she sent 47 texts in one night

I live in a small complex in San Jose and one of my neighbors has been dealing with a guy who won't stop contacting her. She had a temporary restraining order already but he kept finding ways around it. Last Thursday she showed me the texts and there were 47 in a row from midnight to 6am. Her lawyer filed a modification request on Friday and the judge signed it by Monday. I didn't know they could move that fast in family court here. Has anyone else seen a quick turnaround on modifying a restraining order?
