Client critique about my Facebook ad copy made me rethink everything

A client in Phoenix told me my headlines were too salesy and sounded like a used car lot. She said 'I feel like you're shouting at me, not talking to me.' At first I got defensive, but I went back and looked at my last 5 campaigns. My click-through rates were dropping month over month. After I rewrote everything to sound more like a helpful neighbor instead of a pushy salesman, our conversion rate jumped 22 percent. Has anyone else had a client call you out on something that actually improved your work?

My old drafting table trick I picked up in Phoenix saved me a headache

I've been drafting for about 7 years now, doing mostly residential plans for a small firm outside Phoenix. A few months back, I took on a side job for a guy who wanted a tiny house layout with some weird angles. I was skeptical about using my old manual drafting table instead of just doing it all in AutoCAD since I'm pretty fast on the computer. But the angles were so messy on screen, I kept second guessing the roof lines. So I pulled out my old parallel bar and a sharp pencil, laid out the whole thing by hand on vellum in about 3 hours. It came out cleaner than anything I'd done digitally for that project, and the client signed off on it right away. The whole thing made me wonder, do any of you still use manual methods for tricky layouts or is everyone all digital now?

That stat about recycled polyester shocked me

I was looking into fabrics for a new summer line and stumbled on something that really surprised me. Turns out recycled polyester still sheds microplastics when you wash it, just like regular polyester. I found this report from a textile research group in Sweden that tested 10 different recycled fabrics. Almost all of them released tiny plastic fibers into the water after just one wash cycle. I always thought using recycled materials was the eco friendly choice hands down. Now I'm wondering if we should be pushing for more natural fiber blends instead. Has anyone else run into this problem when picking materials for their designs?

The before and after on this 1980s oak kitchen I refaced last month was crazy

I stripped the old honey stain and went with a matte white conversion varnish and it completely changed the whole feel of the room. Has anyone else had luck updating dated oak without just painting over it?

A customer told me my brake jobs were too quiet and now I listen for a different sound

I had this older guy bring his F-150 back three times for a brake squeak I couldn't hear on the test drive. After the third visit he said 'you guys make them too quiet these days, I need to know they're working.' So now I actually pay attention to the rotor feel and pad bite during bedding instead of just chasing silence. Has anyone else had customers ask for brakes that feel or sound a certain way?

Charcoal vs. wood chunks for brisket - what I picked

I was getting ready for a big cook last weekend and had to pick between straight charcoal or mixing in wood chunks for my brisket. I usually go with just lump charcoal because it's easier and gives a clean burn, but this time I tried a mix of oak chunks and charcoal to get more smoke flavor. About halfway through the cook, I noticed the smoke was thicker and the bark was setting up way better than normal. The meat came out with a deeper red color and the flavor was more bold without being bitter. The only downside was I had to manage the fire more often since the chunks burned differently. Now I'm thinking I might switch to this method for good, but I am curious what other folks use for long cooks like this. Has anyone else had trouble with wood chunks dying out too fast on a 12 hour smoke?

Compared store brand rice to name brand and the difference was shocking

I always bought the cheap store brand rice from Walmart to save money. Last week I grabbed a bag of the name brand stuff on sale for the same price. The name brand cooked up fluffier and didn't turn into a sticky mess after sitting for 10 minutes. The store brand always clumped together but I thought that's just how rice worked. Anyone else notice a big difference between cheap and mid-tier rice brands?

I split a hinge clean down the middle on a 1920s novel last week in my shop, and I spent two hours trying to decide between a full reback and a simple hinge repair. Which way do you lean when the spine cloth is still decent but the joint is totally shot?

Three weeks straight of clear water in the Atchafalaya basin

Wait, @grantp28 is that right? Cause I've had the exact same thing happen with my setup and it's brutal. Dave's not alone there I swear I ran my pump dry for like 45 minutes once cause the gauge looked fine but the screen was just caked with silt. You'd think the gauge would show something but nope it just sits there happy while your pump is screaming. @grantp28 is totally right about the vacuum gauge being the real tell though I installed one after that mess and it catches clogs way before the pump gets hurt. Its such a stupid way to learn a lesson but at least you know for next time right?

My rescue cat's coat went from patchy to plush in 6 weeks on this new food

Right there with you. My dog had this sad, dull coat for months and I tried everything. Switched him to a duck and potato food and within a month his fur was so shiny and soft, total night and day difference. It's crazy what a real food change can do, I think a lot of people don't realize how much diet screws with their fur. Glad your cat's looking so good now.
