Showerthought: My old hair straightener saved a book with a warped cover

Ever think about the long term damage? Heat on old cloth and glue seems risky. That low setting is still pretty hot for materials that old. Could make them brittle over time. I'd stick with proper book presses or just accept some wear on a cheap find.

Update: My sourdough starter finally doubled after 3 years of flat loaves

Wow, I always thought starter problems were about feeding, not water.

PSA: I had to pick between a 4-foot and a 12-foot lift for a vaulted ceiling job

Grace607 has a point about bigger tools eating time, but sometimes the hassle is worth it. That 12-foot lift let you reach the peak safely without constant repositioning, which is the real time-saver. Protecting the floor is just part of the setup cost for doing the job right.

My sourdough starter straight up died on me last month

That "throwing it out felt like saying goodbye to a pet" line got me. I had a starter for about four years, and when it died, I felt this weird need to mark the occasion. So I didn't just toss it. I mixed the dead starter into the soil of my lemon tree. Sounds silly, but it felt better than dumping it down the drain. The tree actually put out a bunch of new flowers that season. Now when I bake with the new starter, I think about that cycle. It made starting over feel less like a total loss.
