Rant: my local roaster changed their house blend and now my mornings are off
Stopped by the place on 5th Street Friday morning for my usual bag of beans, and the guy behind the counter told me they reformulated the house blend. I brewed a cup Saturday at 6am, and it tasted flat and bitter, nothing like the chocolate and cherry notes I got used to for two years. I even tried a finer grind and a slower pour, but it still came out wrong. Now I'm stuck paying $18 a bag for something I don't even like. Has anyone found a decent replacement blend that's not too dark or too fruity?
Read a thing on a coffee blog last month about how roasters quietly swap beans when prices jump, and the "new recipe" usually means they found a cheaper supplier. That chocolate and cherry thing you liked was probably a specific bean from one farm, and now it's gone. Makes me mad too because you build a routine around a taste and they just yank it. What bugs me is they never drop the price when they cut the good stuff, right? If they told you upfront you could at least decide if it's worth it to you.
