Skip the spring pass on 6061 and let the cutter do the work
Everyone at my shop swears you need a spring pass to hit tolerance on 6061, but I stopped doing them on a batch of 400 parts last week and every one came in within .0008. Running a 3 flute carbide at 8000 rpm with a .015 finish cut left a better surface than the two pass method my lead taught me. Anyone else ditched the spring pass on aluminum or am I going to regret this on the next run?
