Pro tip: Dried beans vs. canned for a cheap chili

I used to always buy canned beans for chili because it's faster, right? But then I tried a 1-pound bag of dried pinto beans from Aldi for $1.29 last month and soaked them overnight before cooking. That one bag made enough for three batches of chili compared to maybe two cans that cost $1 each, so I saved like $3 total and the texture was way better. Has anyone else switched to dried beans for other dishes like soups or stews?

I used to think 100% copper wire was always worth the extra cost

For years I wouldn't touch copper-clad aluminum for any job. Then I rewired a 1950s house in Austin last fall and the homeowner had already bought CCA for the whole run. I used it, saved them about $400, and after 8 months of follow-up checks the circuits are still solid. Now I recommend CCA for long branch circuits under moderate load. Anyone else had good luck with something they used to hate on?

Figured out my brisket stall was actually a temperature probe issue

Spent three whole cook sessions fighting with what I thought was a weird stall at 165 degrees, only to realize my cheap probe was reading 20 degrees low. Checked it against a known good one and now I'm wondering how many other folks have been misled by their gear for way too long.

Tried a 15 minute timer for small repair jobs and got 3 times as much done

I set a timer for 15 minutes before tackling a squeaky cabinet hinge last Tuesday instead of letting it drag out. Finished the hinge, tightened two drawer pulls, and even wiped down the hardware in that time. Has anyone else tried time-boxing small home fixes and seen a difference?

My 12 year old nephew pointed out I check my phone every time I'm waiting for anything

We were sitting at a red light last Saturday and he just flat out said 'you always look at your phone when you're not doing anything.' Kid was right. I've been trying to put it in the glovebox when I drive now. Anyone else had a kid call them out and change a small habit?

I finally learned why my hot sauce kept going bad after 3 weeks

I was reading a post on r/fermentation last night and found out that I needed to keep my peppers fully submerged with a glass weight, not just pushed down with a spoon. Turns out that little bit of mold on top was from oxygen exposure the whole time. I've been making sauce for 6 months out of my kitchen in Austin, and now I feel silly for not checking sooner. Has anyone else had this issue with air exposure ruining their ferments?

Cranked my offset smoker temp by 30F with a single water pan trick

I've been fighting with heat spikes on my Oklahoma Joe for like 2 years. Always running too hot on the firebox side, meat cooks uneven. Last weekend I moved my water pan from the main chamber to sit directly under the deflector plate. Dropped the temp by a solid 30 degrees and held steady for 6 hours. Anyone else try moving their pan around to fix hot spots?

Furnace went out on the coldest night of January in my first house

I closed on my place in October and last week the furnace just died at 2 AM when it was -10 outside. Had to throw on extra blankets and call an emergency HVAC guy who charged $450 just to show up and fix a ignitor. Anyone else have a surprise repair hit right after moving in that they didn't budget for?

Rant: Sanding dust got into my tape gun bearing on a job in Oak Park

I was halfway through taping a 1,200 square foot basement when the gun started grinding and seized up. Took me 45 minutes to disassemble it on the floor, clean out the crud, and get it running again. Has anyone else had luck with those little dust shields for the intake vents, or is it just part of the gig?

Honestly I used to just let frozen stuff sit in there for months and then toss it. Last month I planned out 3 meals from a single $50 trip to Aldi in Chicago and froze half the veggies and meat.
