PSA: Stop using duct tape to patch wet suits on the job

Saw a guy at the Port of Houston last month tape up a torn drysuit with duct tape and it failed at 30 feet, so why are people still skipping proper vulcanizing patches when a $15 kit from the dive shop takes 10 minutes and lasts for months?

Just realized my password manager was saving duplicates for 2 years

I was cleaning up my vault after a buddy pointed out I had 14 entries for the same bank login. He said, "dude, you're just making it harder to find the real one." So I spent an hour on Sunday merging everything down. He was right, now I can actually find my accounts without scrolling forever. Has anyone else had their vault get this messy?

Visited a discount grocery store in Detroit and found bulk lentils for 99 cents a pound

I was in Detroit last weekend visiting my cousin and she dragged me to this place called Gordon Food Service on Gratiot. It is not a normal grocery store, more like a restaurant supply place. I found 5 pound bags of green lentils for $4.99 and big cans of crushed tomatoes for $1.29 each. They also had a freezer section with bags of frozen mixed veggies for $2.00 a bag. The catch is you have to buy in bulk but if you split it with a friend it is a steal. Has anyone else found hidden deals at restaurant supply stores near them?

That week my van broke down and I still finished 14 calls somehow

Last Tuesday my transmission gave out halfway to a job in Arlington. I had to call my buddy to tow me to the shop and then borrow his old Ford to finish my route. Managed to fix a washing machine, two dryers, and a fridge by 6 PM though. The worst part was the customer with the freezer who kept asking why I was 2 hours late. I ended up pocketing $780 for the week but spent $200 on the tow and repairs. Has anyone else had a disaster week that weirdly worked out in the end?

Overheard a contractor at Home Depot say he uses a paintbrush to apply wood filler and I've been wasting my time with a putty knife

He said it takes 30 seconds per hole instead of 5 minutes of sanding and wiping and now I'm mad I spent 2 hours on a single shelf last weekend, anyone else got a simple swap that made you feel dumb?

Talking to a homeowner changed how I approach butt joints

I was finishing up a basement in a older house last Tuesday and the owner kept watching me work. He asked why I was staggering my butt joints the way I was and I gave him the usual spiel about strength and avoiding long seams. Then he says 'but you're creating a bigger flat spot problem down the road' and I realized he was right. I always just did it the way my first foreman showed me without thinking about the finish coat. Has anyone else had a customer point out something that actually made you work better?

Shoutout to the guy who showed me the baking soda trick for dishwasher smells

I had this dishwasher at a client's house last Tuesday in Phoenix that smelled so bad I thought there was something dead in there. Took me like 20 minutes to pull it out and check the drain pump and everything looked clean. Then this old timer repair guy I ran into at the parts store told me to just dump a cup of baking soda and run a hot cycle before I go pulling things apart. Honestly felt dumb but I tried it on my own machine first and it worked like a charm. Now I do that as a first step on any smelly dishwasher call before I even start pulling tools out. Has anyone else found a cheap fix like that that saves you time on service calls?

Unpopular opinion: That $3 cast iron skillet at the flea market was a waste of my time

Everyone raves about finding cheap cast iron and restoring it, but I grabbed a rusty old Wagner from a guy selling out of his truck bed in Phoenix for $3. Spent 4 hours scrubbing, seasoning, and still couldn't get the pitting out - food stuck like glue. You people need to just save up $20 for a new Lodge and skip the hassle. Who else has been burned by a 'deal' that ended up costing more in effort than it was worth?

Tenant backed out at the last second on a lease I had ready for 3 months

I was showing a space on Grand River near the old Fisher plant. The guy shook my hand and said we had a deal. Then he vanished and stopped answering calls. Has anyone else had tenants ghost them after a handshake in Detroit?
