Hot take: the fan in the bathroom is either useless or a lifesaver and there's no in between
Last Tuesday I was in my bathroom at 11pm with the fan running and I realized it does nothing for smells but it does hide every embarrassing noise I make, so now I'm torn on whether that makes it a hero or a liar. My roommate says a fan that doesn't clear the air is just a noise machine scamming me out of $6 a month in power, but I think the noise cover alone is worth the cost. Is your bathroom fan actually doing work or just pretending to, and would you rather have silence or a little white noise while you're in there?
Agree that noise cover is the whole job. Mine does not clear smells for anything, it just pushes the stink around the room. But it drowns out everything I do in there, so I will keep paying the six bucks. Silent bathrooms are a trap. Give me the hum every time.
Man, this is the same deal as white noise machines and loud fans. People spend money to cover up one noise with another noise. We do it with everything. My fridge hums, my AC rattles, and honestly that dumb little bathroom fan is just part of the background noise that keeps my apartment from sounding like a library. Six bucks a month for a fake wind sound is cheaper than moving.
