Went camping at Hocking Hills last weekend and counted 11 busted stakes in one morning
I walked the loop by Old Man's Cave on Saturday and every site I passed had at least one bent or snapped stake lying in the mud. Talked to a guy packing up near me and he said his aluminum ones folded on the first night and he was going back to steel. Stood there looking at the pile of junk stakes and it hit me, nobody in these review threads ever talks about stake gauge, just tents and sleeping bags. What stakes are you all actually running that don't turn into spaghetti on rocky ground?
Did you check if the bent ones were the twist style or the straight shaft kind? Twist stakes dig in fine but the shaft is thin near the top, so they kink right where the hook meets the ground when you hit a rock. A lot of those "folding on the first night" stories come down to stake shape, not metal type.
