Lost my wallet at a gas station in Amarillo and the guy behind me in line did something I still think about
I was 24, driving from Dallas to Denver to start a job, and I stopped for gas outside Amarillo. Set my wallet on the pump, drove off, got about 40 miles before I noticed. Drove back sure it was gone. Guy behind me in line at the register had picked it up and handed it to the cashier. Waited around 20 minutes to make sure someone came back for it. "Figured you'd want it before you got too far," he said. Cash was still in there. We talked for a bit and it turned out he'd driven trucks for the same company I was headed to. Gave me his name and said ask for him if I needed anything. 30 years later we still talk on the phone a couple times a year. Down to earth guy, never made a big deal of it. Anyway, I keep thinking about how different that trip could've gone. What's the longest you've waited around for a stranger like that?
Waited almost an hour once at a rest stop in Kansas when a lady left her phone on the bench. She came jogging back looking sick to her stomach, and I swear she almost hugged me. Stuff like that sticks with you way longer than you'd think it would. Glad your wallet story had a good ending and a friend in it too.
