Appreciation post: The old timer who swore by wetting the sand for core boxes

I always thought adding water to the molding sand for our core boxes at the Milwaukee plant was a messy, unnecessary step until a veteran showed me his method last week. The cores came out with perfect definition and zero crumbling, saving us a full re-pour on a complex gear housing. Has anyone else found a simple trick that seemed silly but actually works great?

Hot take: I tried using that new flexible fish tape from the supply truck on a tricky retrofit in an old San Antonio house and it just kinked on me halfway through a wall.

I mean, I had to cut open a whole new access panel to get it out, so has anyone found a brand that actually holds up when you need to push through insulation and around corners?

Finally got my copy of Brass: Birmingham to the table after a full year of trying to coordinate schedules with my group.

It took us three hours to finish the first game, but seeing everyone's different strategies click into place by the third round was totally worth the wait, so what's the longest you've waited to play a specific game you were really excited about?

Had a cutterhead chain snap on me last Thursday

We were pulling mud in Mobile Bay when the whole dredge shook and the pump went quiet. Found a broken link in the main drive chain, which had wrapped around the shaft. Took my crew about six hours to cut it free and get a new section bolted in. Anyone know a good brand for heavy duty replacement chains that can handle big shell pieces?

The $500 client who taught me to charge more

Last week, I landed a new client for a website copy project. They agreed to my rate of $500, which felt like a win. Just last month, I would have jumped at that without a second thought. But three years ago, when I started in Chicago, I was taking any job I could get for $100 or less. This new client ended up being the most demanding one I've ever had, sending over 15 rounds of revisions and calling me at all hours. I spent more time on them than on a $1200 project I did in January. It made me realize my low rate was attracting the worst kind of work. I'm raising my minimum project fee starting next month. Has anyone else found that a higher price tag actually filters out the nightmare clients?

Our book club finally agreed on a book after three years of fighting

We meet at the library in Springfield every month, and for three years we could never pick a book without someone getting mad. Last week, we all voted for 'The Night Watchman' by Louise Erdrich, which was a shock. It happened because we finally used a rule where everyone brings one pick and we talk about each one for five minutes. Has your group ever tried a system like that to stop the arguing?

Overheard a homeowner call our work 'just smoothing mud' and it got under my skin

I was grabbing coffee after a pour in Portland last week, and the guy behind me was talking to his friend about his new patio. He said, and I quote, 'It's just a bunch of guys smoothing mud, how hard can it be?' Man, that sat with me all day. It's not just smoothing. It's knowing the exact slump for the weather, timing the finish so you don't burn it or let it get away from you, and fighting the bleed water on a hot day. That 'mud' sets up in a couple hours and if you mess up, it's a $5,000 tear-out, not a do-over. It's a skill built on a thousand pours. Does anyone else get this kind of comment, and how do you even start to explain it without sounding like you're whining?

My cousin swore by using a heat gun on a dent and it went so wrong

So my cousin, who is not a body guy but is always full of advice, told me last week that I should just use a heat gun on a small dent in a quarter panel to pop it out. He said, 'Just get it real hot and tap it from behind, it'll go right back.' I was working on a 2018 Camry for a local guy and figured I'd give it a quick try on a shallow crease. I heated the spot for maybe 30 seconds and gave it a light tap. Next thing I know, the paint blistered up in this perfect circle about the size of a baseball. It went from a simple PDR job to needing a full spot repair and repaint. I mean, the metal didn't even move. I had to tell the customer and eat the cost of the extra work. Has anyone else had a well-meaning tip from a non-pro totally backfire on them?

Finally hit 1000 followers on my barber Instagram

I started posting my fades and beard work back in January, just for fun. I hit the 1000 mark yesterday, which was a total shock. It matters because a guy from two towns over actually booked an appointment after seeing my video on a hard part. Has anyone else seen a real bump in clients from putting their work online?
