I finally fixed that jammed shutter curtain after three nights of fighting it
Picked up a beat up F3 from a flea market in Portland last month and the shutter curtain kept catching at the end of travel. Took me three evenings just to realize the problem was the curtain drum spring had slipped a full turn, not the ribbon tension like I kept checking. I had already taken the top plate off twice and even swapped in a spare drum from a parts body before I thought to count the click noises. Once I rewound that spring the right number of rotations, it ran smooth on the first test. Has anyone else spent way too long on a simple fix that only clicked when you stopped assuming the obvious culprit?
The "count the click noises" part made me laugh because that is EXACTLY the kind of thing I always skip. I once spent two hours freaking out over a dead camera, convinced the meter was fried, and it turned out the battery was just in backwards. Two HOURS. I had the light seals out and everything. My best one though was a lens I swore had focus issues, took it apart, cleaned every element, put it back together, still soft. Turns out I just needed glasses. So yeah, we all do the thing where we jump to the hard answer and skip the dumb one.
