Bought a $40 portable washing machine for road trips and it leaked everywhere

I picked up one of those mini washing machines from a camping store for my van trip out west and figured it would save me money on laundromats. First time I used it, water poured out the bottom and soaked my floor mat, so I had to dry everything out at a pay-by-the-hour spot anyway. Has anyone found a portable washer that actually works for long drives without flooding your ride?

I found out the average person has over 100 unused subscriptions draining their bank account

I was digging through my monthly statements and stumbled on a Pew survey saying the average person throws away about $25 a month on subscriptions they forgot about. That really hit home when I counted 7 old streaming and app subscriptions I hadn't touched in 6 months. Has anyone else found some sneaky recurring charges after a deep clean?

Spent 2 hours on a weld joint that should have taken 30 minutes

Had a job at a refinery in Baton Rouge last week and tried using a new flux core wire from Hobart. That stuff was supposed to be the same as what I've been using but it just kept birdnesting on me. What did I learn? Stick with the Lincoln NR-211 for pipe work and stop chasing deals on consumables. Any of you guys had a brand switch that backfired like this?

Overheard a older bricklayer say he never wets his bricks before laying

I was at a supplier yesterday and this guy with 30 years experience said he never soaks his bricks even on hot days. He said modern bricks are made tighter and wetting them just makes the mortar slide around. I always thought you had to wet bricks to stop them sucking water out of the mortar too fast. Anyone else heard this approach or had trouble with bricks drying out too quick on a summer job?

Took me 3 whole days to figure out why my microwave smelled like burning plastic

Kept reheating leftovers and getting this weird burnt smell. Checked the vent, cleaned the inside twice, even unplugged it overnight. Finally on day 3 I realized I left a plastic fork on the turntable that melted into a tiny puddle. Felt like a total idiot. Has anyone else missed something super obvious like that?

A guy at a meetup told me my elevator pitch was all wrong and I completely changed it

Last month at a networking event in Austin, someone I'd just met listened to my 30-second pitch and said I sounded like a robot reading a spec sheet. He asked me what problem I actually SOLVE for real people. That made me scrap the whole thing. I rewrote it to focus on a specific client story instead of listing features. Now I get way more follow-up conversations. Has anyone else had a total stranger give feedback that actually helped?

Saw a master tech diagnose a no-start in 4 minutes flat yesterday

Old timer told me to use dish soap instead of creosote remover. Here is what happened.

I was working a job in Buffalo last month and a retired sweep named Hank told me to just squirt some Dawn in a spray bottle with hot water and hit the heavy creosote spots before brushing. I thought he was messing with me at first. But after 3 tough cleanings this winter where my regular stuff wasn't cutting it, I gave it a try on a rental property with a wood stove insert. The creosote actually softened up way faster and I cut my brush time by like 20 minutes. I still used my steel brush after but it was way less elbow grease. Has anyone else heard this trick or am I just late to the party?

Hit 50 different brew methods this year. Did not see that coming.

I started keeping a little notebook back in January just to track what I was making at home. Nothing serious, just a way to remember what worked. Last night I flipped through it and counted 50 different brew methods I had tried this year. That includes the usual stuff like pour over and French press, but also some weird ones like a vacuum pot I borrowed from a friend and a cold drip tower I rented for a weekend. A few of them were total flops, like that Turkish coffee attempt that left mud everywhere. But most of them taught me something about how heat or grind size changes the taste. I guess I didn't realize how deep I had gone until I saw that number on paper. Has anyone else kept a log like this and been surprised by their own count?

PSA: Hit 500 door dings fixed this month and it made me rethink my whole sanding process

I was going through my invoices this morning and noticed I did 500 door ding repairs this month alone lol. That's way more than I thought. Most of them are the same basic parking lot dents people get from shopping carts or careless neighbors. I used to spend like 20 minutes sanding each one down by hand cause I thought it gave me better control. But after number 400 I started timing myself and realized I was wasting almost 5 minutes per ding doing it that way. So I switched to using a DA sander with 180 grit on a low speed for the rough stuff then finishing by hand. Now I'm averaging 12 minutes per repair instead of 20. That's like 40 hours saved over the month. Has anyone else noticed a huge time difference switching up their sanding method on small dent repairs?

Rant: That one Tuesday where everything that could go wrong did go wrong

Lost a whole day's pay plus had to buy lunch for everyone" - man that part really stings. I actually read this article a few weeks back about how construction workers in the south deal with buried utilities getting hit all the time because of old maps and stuff. It said something like 1 in 4 digs hit something unmarked. Makes me wonder how many other people have had their Tuesday ruined like that. Your story about the auger hitting the gas line and then the bee sting on top of it is wild. I hate it when everything stacks up like that. The thunderstorm at the end just feels like the universe was personally out to get you that day. Did you ever find out who was supposed to flag that gas line? I would have been so mad. Hope your next job went smoother. Nobody deserves a day like that.
