Honestly, I think the push for everyone to use static IPs on small office networks is overkill.

That "3 hours manually assigning addresses" part is the real cost people forget. It's not just the time, it's the human error risk. Now someone has to keep a perfect spreadsheet forever or the next tech is lost. Static makes sense for servers, but for a printer? You're just building a future headache.

Chatting with my neighbor, a retired teacher, made me realize I was overcomplicating my first Python script.

Your neighbor is totally right. I built a web scraper once and got lost trying to make it perfect. Had to delete everything and just make it fetch one page of text, like @averymartin was getting at. Seeing that one dumb line print to the console was the win. Now I literally write "dumb version" as a comment at the top of my file to remind myself.

My whole night got wrecked by a neighbor's floodlight during the Perseids

That tent trick is next level commitment. I'd probably just drive an extra hour for a darker spot.

Appreciation post: my old boss's way of checking for bleed water versus just eyeballing it

Seriously, @the_simon? Cleveland gets a bad rap for no good reason. The food scene there is actually amazing, and the people are the real deal. It's way better than most places people hype up.

My old tent finally gave up after a windy night in the Catskills last weekend.

My buddy's old camp stove was a total nightmare, always clogging. He finally grabbed a basic Coleman two burner like five years ago, and that thing fires up first click every single time, even in the rain. It's just a tank.
