inDebate: chasing drips on a rough cable housing vs just replacing it every time
I get what you're saying about settled housing having a memory, that's a real thing. But I've had the opposite luck - replacing a whole run just because of one drip felt like overkill to me. I had a bike where the rear derailleur housing was routed through the frame and swapping it was a 30 minute nightmare of fishing cable through internal tunnels. A quick snip of the old ferrule and a dab of oil fixed the drip in 5 minutes and the shifting was fine for another year. Sometimes chasing that drip is actually faster than pulling the whole system apart, you know? Not every kink in the housing means it's shot, especially if you just loosen the bolt and let it find its own curve again.

inHot take: maybe we don't need to prune every single dead branch off a tree?
That's a fair point about the cost of waiting too long. But doesn't the whole "letting it decay" thing depend a lot on what kind of tree it is and where the dead wood is? Like, a big dead branch on a fast-growing maple is a whole different ballgame than a small dead limb way up in a sturdy oak. Your buddy's maple sounds like it was doomed from the start if rot traveled that fast. A lot of oaks have natural defenses that can wall off dead areas, you know? Isn't it worth figuring out which trees actually need the snag for habitat versus which ones are just asking for trouble?

inGot a vintage lens CLA that I thought was a waste of money
I read an interview with a repair guy from Chicago who said most vintage lenses he sees have damage from someone trying to clean them at home with the wrong stuff. He said isopropyl can actually strip the coating on the glass if you're not careful. My lens came back with a little note from the Portland guy saying the old grease had basically turned to glue, and no amount of manual forcing would fix that. So for $85 I basically got a $30 lens that feels like a $200 one now. Makes me wonder how many good lenses end up in the trash because people don't know how simple a proper CLA can be.

inOverheard a guy at the coffee shop say doodles need to be 'finished' to count
Was there a guy with a little cap and a notebook full of graphite smudges? I saw a guy like that at Bean & Leaf once, he got mad at someone for doodling with a Bic pen instead of proper art pencils. Reminds me of the time my uncle told me a joke doesn't count unless you tell it with a straight face. But half the fun is trying not to laugh while you're telling it. Same with doodles, the messy ones have the most character.

inMy cheap rice cooker died after only 4 months of use
Wait, it actually fried the coil that bad after just 30 uses?
