Switched from booking flights through Expedia to booking direct last year

I used to always use Expedia for everything, thought I was getting the best deals. Then my flight to Austin got canceled and they put me on hold for 3 hours while people who booked direct got rebooked in 10 minutes. Now I check Google Flights to compare prices but book straight with the airline, even if it costs $15-20 more. Has anyone else had a nightmare with third party sites when things go wrong?

Garage sale guy in Tulsa refused to haggle over a $3 coffee table. That changed my whole approach.

I was at this sale last Saturday and saw a solid oak coffee table for $3. I asked if he could do $2 and he just stared at me and said "Ma'am, it's already three dollars." Made me realize I've been bargaining out of habit even when the price is basically free. Has anyone else had a moment at a yard sale that made you rethink your haggling strategy?

That 50/30/20 rule was failing me until I swapped two numbers

I was barely saving anything each month with the standard 50/30/20 split. Switched to putting 40% toward needs, 20% wants, and 40% savings, and after 3 months I had $1,200 extra in my emergency fund. Has anyone else tweaked the percentages to something that actually worked for their situation?

Had to choose between store brand laundry soap and name brand...

I ran out of detergent last Thursday and stood there in the aisle at the Walmart on 41st Street trying to decide. The store brand was $6.49 for 100 loads and the Tide was $12.99 for the same size. My mom always swore by the name brand stuff, said the cheap stuff leaves residue and smells weird. But I'm trying to cut my grocery bill under $400 a month, so I grabbed the store brand. First load came out fine, no smell, clothes felt clean. But after about three washes, I noticed my towels felt kinda stiff and not as soft. Then my husband mentioned his shirts felt scratchy. So now I'm wondering if I should've just spent the extra $6.50. Has anyone else had this problem with the off-brand detergents?

Spent $35 on a set of Micron pens and they dried out in two weeks.

I bought them for my daily bujo spreads and by day 14 the 005 was already skipping, has anyone else had better luck with a different brand that actually lasts?

I walked into that tiny bookstore in Portland and got a wakeup call about writing prompts

I was browsing the shelves near the fiction section and noticed this beat up notebook sitting on a stool. It was FULL of crazy writing prompts people had scribbled down, like "write about a mailbox that only delivers regret" and "what if your coffee cup could talk." I stood there for 20 minutes reading through like 60 prompts and felt dumb because my own prompts are always so boring like "write about a rainy day." Have any of you guys found a weird book or spot that gave you a fresh angle on prompts that caught you off guard?

I finally stopped using cheap coax connectors after a nightmare job in Phoenix

Pulled a 200 foot run through a crawlspace in 110 degree heat. Connector failed the signal test three times. Switched to compression fittings that same week and never looked back. Anyone else switch brands after one bad job?

Picked a hostel with no A/C over a hotel in New Orleans in July - here's how it went

I was booking a 3 night trip to New Orleans last month and had $150 total for lodging. Found this hostel in the Marigny for $40 a night vs a Comfort Inn near the Superdome for $110. Figured I'd save the cash for food and music. Big mistake. First night it was 95 degrees and the room fan just moved hot air around. I ended up sleeping on a bench outside by the Mississippi river at 2am. Second night I caved and paid $60 for a last minute hotel room. So I spent $140 total anyway. Has anyone else tried to rough it without AC in the south and regretted it?

PSA: A $40 pack of zip ties saved me from a tangled mess on the barge

I was pulling up a nasty snag near the Mississippi last week and my hoses were all over the place. Grabbed a bag of heavy-duty zip ties from Harbor Freight for $40 and strapped everything down. Has anyone else tried using cable management tricks to keep gear from getting caught up?

Unpopular opinion: I stopped using tomato cages three years ago and my plants are better for it.

I used to cage everything, but after a storm in July 2021 flattened my whole setup, I switched to just using a single strong stake and tying the main stem loosely with twine. The plants get more air, I see fewer bugs, and harvesting is way easier. What's your go-to method for keeping tomatoes off the ground?
