My French press exploded at 6 AM last Tuesday and I still prefer it over any drip machine

You are spot on with the thermal shock thing. I cracked a glass French press the exact same way years ago, pouring boiling water right from the electric kettle into a cold carafe. The difference in temperature is just too much for that thick glass to handle. I started doing the same thing you do, just letting the water sit in the kettle for a solid 30 seconds after it clicks off. That small change has saved my press every single time since. I also started running hot tap water over the glass first to warm it up a little, which helps a ton too. It sounds like a minor tweak but it makes a huge difference in keeping that glass from shattering.

Cheap flights vs bus rides for a trip to Portland last month

Sixty bucks difference seems to be the magic number where people start choosing misery over saving money.

Realized I was overwatering my ferns after a guy at the Decatur farmers market yelled at me

One time a guy at Lowe's told me to stop watering my succulents so much. Changed everything.

Hit 100 rejections on short story submissions today

Respectfully, 100 rejections means the story probably isn't working.

Learned something crazy about purple hair dye today

Actually there's been some research coming out of a few cosmetic chemistry labs that tested different purple pigments and how they bond to hair. Something about the size and shape of the molecules used in cheaper dyes makes them slip out way faster. I saw this breakdown from a salon science blog where they compared three popular purple brands under a microscope and one of them had these massive clumps that barely stuck to the cuticle. The brand with the smallest, most even particles held color almost twice as long in the test. Might be worth checking ingredient lists for something like Basic Violet 2 versus Basic Violet 1 since the molecular structure is slightly different.
