Just realized I'd been peeling ginger wrong my whole life - used a spoon instead of a knife and it worked way better.

The frozen ginger thing sounds amazing but honestly I've tried it a few times and you gotta be careful. If the ginger is too frozen solid, the spoon just skips across the surface and doesn't peel anything, it actually works better when it's just cold from the fridge but not rock hard. I mean, I wasted a whole knob trying to do it with ginger straight from the freezer and ended up with a mess. Also, I don't think peeling with a spoon really stops waste that much compared to a knife, like you still have to shave off some flesh to get all the brown bits in the crevices. The real win for me with the spoon is just how fast and smooth it is on the lumpy parts, not necessarily saving more ginger. And yeah turmeric peels the same way, totally agree on that part.

That $8 pour-over I bought last week at that little shop on Belmont was the best coffee I've had in months, then I burned myself on the carafe.

Burned my tongue on a french press plunger last week... couldn't taste anything for two days.

Spent 45 minutes hunting for an outlet at a packed café in Austin

oh my god that's literally my laptop every single day. the moment it hits 15% it starts making that noise like it's personally offended i didn't plug it in sooner. i once literally sat on the floor of a mcdonald's bathroom because it was the only outlet i could find. felt so judged by everyone walking in but hey my screen didn't die so worth it

Chat with a retired bookbinder at the library cafe made me rethink my hinge technique

Yeah totally get that feeling. Old timers know their stuff because they did it for decades without all the fancy new tools. They learned the hard way what works and what doesn't. Makes you stop and think about all the little shortcuts you take without even realizing it. I had a similar moment with a master carpenter once he pointed out my miter joints were off by just a hair and I felt like an idiot for not noticing sooner. It's humbling but also kinda cool that someone took the time to share their knowledge

Old timer on the bank told me to 'listen to the mud'

Trust your gauges and your own ears" is spot on. Had a guy swear I was gonna punch a hole in my hull based on a vibration I couldn't feel, turned out it was just a loose bolt. You been burned by a bad tip like that before too?
