inBuilding a wheel without patience is a guarantee for failure
Force yourself to follow each step properly even when you want to rush. If you skip checking spoke tension or skip the trueing process, you will absolutely end up with a hop or a wobble. Rushing just means you have to do the whole job twice after it fails the first time. The time you think you save upfront gets spent fixing your mistakes later.

inShoutout to the old-timer at the shop who showed me a trick for seating stubborn tires
Does canola work better than other cooking oils for this? I've got olive and vegetable oil in my kitchen but worry about them going rancid on the rim. Never considered keeping a dedicated bottle in the shed.

inSeeing coworkers give free refills made me rethink our shop's rules
Sounds like you're overthinking it. That juice costs pennies per pour. Boss lets it slide because good service brings people back. Regulars getting free refills probably tip better too. Wasted food or a broken plate costs more than some soda. Charging for every little thing just makes customers not want to come.

inSoftware freeze cost me a finished elevation drawing.
My roommate's cat, Whiskers, has slept on my laptop for years without deleting a thing. People blame cats, but honestly, if you're losing work, maybe save more often. Unlike @the_faith's power button time, my cat just keeps the laptop warm and purrs. That sound helps me focus better than silence. It's a trade off for having a friend around. Plus, cats on laptops make for great photos online.

inI wore a shirt I dyed myself to a picnic and it turned my skin blue for days. What's the best way to test colors before wearing them out?
Wash the heck out of that shirt first, like a bunch of times in hot water (seriously, more than you think). A lot of home dyers skip the proper after-wash step where you get all the extra dye out. For testing, cut a small swatch of the same fabric you used, dye it with the shirt, and then rub the wet swatch hard on a white paper towel. If color comes off, it's not done bleeding yet. A quick soak in some vinegar water after dyeing can sometimes help set certain dyes, too, but that really depends on the dye type.
