Hot take: I heard someone say 'sustainable fashion is just beige linen sacks' at a coffee shop in Austin.

I was grabbing a coffee last Tuesday and overheard two designers at the next table. One said, 'All this sustainable fashion talk just means more beige linen sacks, it's killing creativity.' That stuck with me. I think it's a lazy take; innovation in recycled textiles and zero-waste pattern cutting is some of the most creative work happening right now. Has anyone else seen a design that totally changed their mind on what 'eco-friendly' can look like?

Guess they've never seen a cool jacket made from old soda bottles.

That designer needs to get out more. I saw a jacket made from recycled plastic bottles that looked like high-end tech wear, not a burlap bag. Another brand cuts patterns that leave zero fabric scraps, creating these wild geometric shapes. Calling it all beige sacks is just ignoring the actual innovation happening.

Okay but nancythomas, have you actually tried to buy those pieces? I looked up that zero waste brand last month. The geometric shirt was over $400 and sold out in minutes. The cool recycled bottle jacket you mentioned only comes in two sizes. For most people, sustainable fashion is still either crazy expensive or looks like a potato sack. The innovation is neat but it's not really changing what's on the rack at normal stores.
