Shoutout to the dad joke I tried on my kids during a car ride

Ngl, I tested out a pun about a broken pencil during a 20 minute drive to school last week. My kids groaned so loud the driver next to me rolled down his window to ask what happened. I learned that timing is everything with dad jokes deliver them when they're stuck in traffic and can't escape.

That's the real test right there... trapping them in a confined space with no escape route. Did you at least lock the child locks on the doors so they couldn't jump out at a red light? I find the best results come when I wait until we're on the highway where there's absolutely zero chance of a walk-out.

Bet I'm more worried about them memorizing my routes and knowing exactly where the breakdown lane shoulders are wide enough to pull over.

Friend of mine tried the "I'm reading a book about anti-gravity" joke on his kids while driving through a tunnel. He timed it perfectly as they went in and the echo made the punchline sound all warped and weird. His 12 year old daughter just pulled out her earbuds, gave him the deadest stare, and said "Dad, that joke is older than the car we're in." The 9 year old son though actually laughed and asked what happens when you put the book down. So I guess it's a split decision with kids at different ages. Made me wonder if there's a right age for dad jokes to actually work or if you just keep firing them off until they stop pretending to hate them.
