Still can't believe I dismissed those $8 hair cutting shears
I picked up a pair from a beauty supply shop in Austin last year as a backup and they've become my main pair for blunt cuts. They're still sharp after 40+ haircuts, has anyone else found a hidden gem that surprised them?

Honestly, I think the real hidden gem is realizing most haircutting shears are overpriced because salons need to write them off as business expenses. My aunt's been a barber for 20 years and swears by a $15 pair she got at a flea market in Dallas. She says the expensive ones just have fancier handles but the blade quality is basically the same if you find the right supplier. Ngl, I got a similar pair on Amazon for $12 and they've been sharp for like 30 cuts now, no issues. The trick is just keeping them oiled and not dropping them on tile floors.

He's spot on with that, @johnson.faith, and it's part of a bigger pattern where we get tricked into thinking expensive means better for basic tools. Same thing happens with kitchen knives or even basic hand tools, where the brand markup is insane but the actual performance comes down to maintenance more than materials. Maybe it's just me, but once you realize most of these pro-grade products just ride on a reputation, it really changes how you shop for stuff that actually does the job.

Gotta say, I used to think spending more on tools like this mattered, but @johnson.faith's point about maintenance over materials really makes sense now. Your mileage may vary, but it's opened my eyes to how much brand hype plays into what we buy.
