Serious question, I thought those $200 Japanese steel shears were just hype.

Try sharpening your current shears more often.

My friend told me to always check the back of old photos in books, and I'm glad I did

Found a birthday card in a used cookbook once. The message inside was way more interesting than the recipes. Those little notes are the best part.

My kid called my old cookbook a 'recipe website made of paper'

Honestly, that old paper method forced you to learn the feel of it, you know? My grandma's handwritten recipes are a mess of stains and guesses, but following them taught me when batter should look a certain way. Videos can make you too careful, like you're afraid to mess up their perfect version. Sometimes a flat cake just tastes better because you made it yourself, mistakes and all.

Watch out for that new quick-set mix they sell at the big box stores

Learned that the hard way mixing a small batch for some fence repairs last summer. Used cool water from the hose, almost ice cold, and it bought me a few extra minutes. Also, I only mix half a bag at a time now, even if it's more work. Rushing just means you lose the whole batch.

My break room coffee pot saga last Tuesday was a total mess

Wait, isn't it worse than just leaving a problem for someone else? @jordan903, I see your point, but a forgotten coffee pot actually makes a new problem. It ruins the pot and makes the whole room stink. That's different from just not refilling something. It's like if someone didn't just leave a cart, but let their cart roll and dent a car. The rule should be if you burn it, you learn and buy a new pot.
