Saw a salon in Milwaukee charging $15 extra for a 'hydration boost' during a color service
It's just a deep conditioner applied under a heat cap for ten minutes. Some clients think it's a scam, but the owner says it covers the extra product and time. Would you add something like this to your menu?

Maybe it just sounds better than calling it a ten dollar heat cap fee.

Isn't that how all these fees work? They pick a name that sounds almost reasonable, like it's for a real service, so you don't get mad about the extra ten bucks. You're right, @christopherwilson, "heat cap" just sounds like some necessary piece of equipment. It's way better for them than calling it a "because we can" fee, which is what it really is. They know people would complain more if the name was too honest. It's all about making the extra charge seem like a normal part of the bill.

Yeah the "sounds like a real service" thing is so true. I saw an article about how airlines are the worst for this. They'll call it a "carrier interface charge" or some nonsense instead of just saying "extra money for fuel." My gym tried adding a "facility wellness fee" last year until everyone lost their minds. It's just a made up name for "we want more money.
