Can we talk about how people over-process fine hair?
I had a lady come into my chair in Denver last week with hair that looked like straw, and she swore she only used a box dye once a month. She wanted a balayage, but I had to tell her her hair was already snapping off. How do you guys handle clients who don't believe their hair is actually damaged?

...and the thing nobody talks about is how hard water plays into this whole mess. I see it all the time with my sister's fine hair... she lives in an area with bad tap water and was blaming her stylist for breakage when really the mineral buildup was just making her hair feel rough and then she'd try to overcompensate with more products. That straw texture your client had... could be box dye and hard water working together to eat through the cuticle. Might be worth asking them what their water situation is like before you even touch the balayage.

A chelating shampoo once a week can fix it before you ever pick up a brush.

My buddy's girlfriend had to buy a filtered showerhead after her hair turned orange from the tap water.
