Hacked my coffee budget by tracking each cup for 30 days

I hit 47 cups last month at local shops. That's like $140 on lattes alone. Started bringing a thermos from home instead. Saved $60 in the first week. Anyone else done a cost breakdown on their coffee habit?

Kept a coffee jar on my counter and threw in five bucks every time I brought a cup from home. Watched that jar fill up fast. Ended up using that cash for a nice grinder and a french press. Paid for itself in three weeks.

Wait, does the five bucks go in when you bring coffee from home or when you buy coffee out? I'm confused because it sounds like you're rewarding yourself for bringing coffee from home, but then you say it paid for the grinder. If you're putting in five bucks every time you make coffee at home, that's actually costing you more in the long run right? Like you're spending five dollars every time you brew your own coffee, which is way more than the actual cost of the beans and water. I don't see how that saves money unless you're using it as a separate savings fund and not actually spending the five dollars elsewhere.

My buddy tried this and found out he was spending more on coffee than his car insurance.
