Found a way to get free paint samples at the big hardware store by bringing my own tiny jars.
I was at the Home Depot in Tacoma last Thursday and saw a guy filling a dozen little containers from the sample wall, which made me realize they don't charge if you supply your own instead of using their cups.

Wait, isn't that just stealing? Those samples are meant for testing a color at home, not for getting free paint. If everyone did that, they'd have to stop offering samples... which would ruin it for people who actually need to try a color. It feels like taking advantage of a good thing. I get wanting to save money, but that's going too far.

Yeah, and like @verawhite said, it's totally taking advantage. Those little sample cans cost the store real money to make. If enough people treat it like a free paint supply, they'll either jack up the price for everyone or just get rid of samples completely. Then nobody can test a color properly, and you end up wasting way more money on a whole gallon you hate.

Just mix your own from leftover paint, like Riley said.
