That time I tried to be a cool aunt at a school play
My niece had a lead role in her 3rd grade play about dinosaurs, and I went all out with a giant foam T-Rex hand to cheer her on. Right at the quietest part, I accidentally smacked the person in front of me with it, and the whole row turned to stare. I spent the rest of the show trying to shrink into my seat, and now I stick to polite clapping at kid events. Anyone else have a good intention go totally wrong in public?

Oh man, that foam hand story is painfully funny. I once brought a giant cowbell to a little league game for my nephew and got the dirtiest look from the coach when I rang it at the wrong time. The urge to disappear is so real.

Just own it and ring that bell louder next time, @fiona_murphy.

I get what @grace607 is saying about owning it, but sometimes that loud bell just isn't the right fit for the moment. My kid's piano recital taught me that a quiet clap can mean more than a noisy cheer. It depends on the setting.
