Found a 1980s repair manual that changed how I clean lenses

Was going through a box of old stuff from a retired repair guy in Chicago last month. Found a Nikon F3 service manual from 1982 with handwritten notes in the margins. One note said to use a tiny dab of isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip for oily aperture blades instead of the usual lighter fluid. I tried it on a stubborn Pentax lens that had that slow sticky aperture issue. Cleaned right up in about 10 minutes with no residue. Has anyone else come across old repair manuals with tricks that beat the modern methods?

Hit 500 parts off a single end mill and I'm still surprised

I was running a simple 6061 job last month. Nothing crazy, just a bracket with some 2D contours. I figured I'd get maybe 200 parts before the tool started showing wear. I checked it every 50 parts waiting for it to fail. That thing just kept cutting. By 400 I was laughing. At 500 I stopped the machine and measured everything. Still within .002. I used HSM toolpaths with a .500 3 flute carbide from a cheap Chinese set. Anyone else get way more life out of a tool than you expected?

Burnt wings at a family BBQ taught me the value of preheating

I was at my cousin's place in Phoenix last weekend for a cookout and totally ruined two batches of chicken wings in the air fryer because I skipped the preheat step. Turns out tossing cold food into a cold basket just makes everything steam instead of crisp up, and my wings came out rubbery and sad. Anybody else learn this the hard way or did I just miss the memo on basic air fryer rules?

Cold brew with cinnamon changed my morning routine last week

I usually just dump my regular dark roast in the French press each morning. But last week I tried making a big batch of cold brew with some Ceylon cinnamon sticks I had sitting in the pantry. I dropped two sticks into the jar before sticking it in the fridge for about 18 hours. The result was this mellow, almost sweet flavor without any sugar at all. No bitterness either, which I always get with hot brew. Now I'm wondering if I got lucky with the cinnamon or if this is a thing people do regularly. Any of you tried spices in your cold brew and had it work out?

Picked a stick welder over a mig for my home shop

Been doing mostly field work for years but finally set up a little shop in my garage. I had to choose between a Lincoln 140 mig or an old Miller stick machine for around 500 bucks. Went with the stick because it handles thicker metal and dirty surfaces better, plus no gas refills. First week I burned through three rods learning the angle again but got a clean weld on a trailer hitch. Any of you guys run stick in your home shop or did I make a mistake?

I was relining my small furnace last month and couldn't decide between ceramic fiber blanket and insulating firebrick for the hot face. I went with the blanket because it was cheaper and easier to cut, but now after 10 melts I'm noticing it's starting to degrade faster than I expected. Anyone else run into this problem with blanket wear or should I just tear it out and switch to brick?

Overheard a dude at the truck stop talking about The Bear

I was grabbing coffee at a Pilot in Ohio and this guy was raving about The Bear on Hulu. He said season 2 episode 7 broke him because it was just one person cooking alone in a kitchen. That got me curious so I watched the whole series in 4 days. The fast talking and yelling reminded me of dispatch on a bad day. Anyone else find a show just from a random comment from a stranger?
