That seasoned florist was right about my rose prep all along

I spent 3 years doing roses the way my old boss taught me - just stripping the thorns and cutting at an angle. Last month a florist who's been in business 25 years told me I was bruising the stems by stripping them too aggressively. I switched to using a sharp knife instead of a stripper and now my roses last 5 days longer in the cooler. It was such a simple fix that I feel silly for fighting it for so long. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit from early in their career?

Oh great, so now I gotta add "emotional damage to flowers" to my list of things to feel guilty about. Next you're gonna tell me my pruning shears give the stems performance anxiety. But for real, 5 extra days is a huge difference. Customers absolutely notice when their flowers crap out on day 3 instead of day 8. Unless your clientele is a bunch of cacti that don't care about freshness. Either way, glad you finally saw the light instead of stubbornly attacking every stem like a medieval knight.

Wait @shane_fisher37 you don't think customers notice 5 extra days of fresh roses?

Five extra days in the cooler is nice and all, but are your customers really noticing the difference or is it just you?
