The great online fabric color letdown

I was so excited to start a new project with what looked like a vibrant coral silk on a popular fabric site. When the roll showed up, it was this pale peach shade that killed my whole design vibe. This isn't the first time, either. Last month, I ordered 'forest green' linen and got something closer to mud. It throws off my mood boards and makes planning a collection feel pointless if I can't trust the colors. I spend hours picking palettes only to have the key piece arrive wrong. Do these places not check their photos against the real product? It's costing me time and money on returns. How do you guys deal with this without going to physical stores every time?

My last 'scarlet' silk came out looking like washed-out pink from a 90s gym shirt. It's like these sites use filters so strong they could make a garbage bag look like satin. I've started ordering swatches, but half the time those don't match the final roll either. The only sure way is to assume every color is a lie and plan for disappointment. Their photo team must be colorblind or just really hopeful. At this point, my mood boards have a 'surprise me' section for when the fabric actually shows up.

Morgan's point about assuming colors are a lie hits home, but tbh, I've found that digging into user photos on the site can save some headache. Last time I ordered 'midnight blue' velvet, the product shot was pure black, but customer pics showed it had a subtle navy sheen. I always scroll past the official images now to see what people actually got. It's not perfect, but it cuts down on surprises. Some sites even have a section for customer uploads, which is way more reliable. Ngl, it takes extra time, but it beats planning for disappointment from the start.
