Just had a brand new forge weld fail on me after 10 minutes

I was fitting a set of front shoes on a Percheron yesterday, and the weld on the toe clip let go before I even got the second nail in. The owner saw it and asked if I was using old stock rods. Anyone else had new welding rods from a certain batch go bad on them?

Hold on, old stock rods ain't usually the problem, it's more often a bad batch of flux. I've had brand new rods from a fresh case that were junk right out of the wrapper, so don't rule out that possibility. Before you blame the age of the rod, check that your heat and gas flow is dialed in right for that particular batch.

Yeah that flux can be finicky on new rods, I've had the same issue with a fresh box where the weld looked fine but popped apart under the first bit of real stress. Might be worth running a test weld on a piece of scrap before you put it on the shoe next time.

Whoa wait, you're telling me you've had whole cases of brand new rods that were just junk? That blows my mind, I always figured fresh stock was safe.
