A trainer in Kentucky insisted I never use a hoof stand for trimming.

He said it builds bad habits and weakens your back. I've used one for fifteen years without a single issue, and my back is fine. Anyone have a strong opinion on this, or is it just old-school thinking?

What works for one person can be a bad habit for another. My farrier friend, like @the_nathan's, says it's all about how you set your stance. If your back is fine after fifteen years, you're probably using it right.

My old boss in Tennessee banned them for the same reason. I tried trimming without one for a year and my knees were shot. Sometimes the stand is the tool that saves your body, not hurts it.

My farrier in Lexington uses one for every single trim. It's about proper posture, not the tool itself.
