My uncle told me to skip the switchbacks on the Timberline Trail

Yeah, I was all about finding the direct line too until a similar mess. Uma_martinez is totally right about why those paths are built the way they are. Now I just trust the trail.

Remember my buddy's trick with the pencil eraser?

PSA: I lost $150 trying to find a quick answer on a random forum instead of just asking here

Feel your pain, spent $80 on a "definitive" guide to fixing my washing machine. It was just a PDF of the free manual from the manufacturer's website. The real trick was just unplugging it for five minutes.

Showerthought: Everyone says to trust your gauges, but mine lied to me on a bridge job in Tampa.

Oh man, that's the worst. Had a pressure gauge on a rental tank stick at 1500 psi once. I was happily swimming along, thinking I had plenty of air left, when it just went from 1500 to 200 in a heartbeat. No warning, no slow drop, just a hard stick and then a panic-inducing freefall. It's why I double-check with a backup computer now, even on simple dives. You just can't trust a single point of failure.

Appreciation post: The 45-minute map fold in a Wyoming windstorm

Ugh, I feel your pain. I ended up sitting right on the thing. Just plopped down on the trail and used my legs and the ground to pin all the corners. It looked stupid but it worked. I traced my route with a finger while the wind just whipped over my back. Had to re-fold it later in the tent.
