Learning to make tamales during a family visit to Texas

My aunt taught me her secret recipe in her Houston kitchen. What travel memories do your family recipes bring back?

Grandma's farm in Iowa taught me to can pickles during a thunderstorm. The feel of the hot jars in my hands, the sound of rain on the tin roof, it all comes back when I seal the lids. It's not just the taste, it's the whole muscle memory of my fingers working that specific way. That rough grip on the knife chopping dill, it transports me right back to her crowded pantry. Those physical motions are like a recording of the trip itself. Kind of amazing how your hands can remember a place.

My aunt in Houston always adds a pinch of cinnamon to her beef filling, which sounded crazy until I tried it. That smell immediately takes me back to her steamy kitchen and the laughing arguments over how to fold the husks. I learned my grandma's pierogi recipe during a summer in Pittsburgh, and now every time I roll that dough I can hear the cicadas through her screen door. Those tastes and smells are the best souvenirs, way better than any t-shirt.

My uncle's tamales always seemed dry until I saw him steam them with a damp towel on top. Now that trick makes me think of his Phoenix backyard every single time.
