I finally realized those discount gym membership deals are a total scam
Signed up for a year at FitZone in Cleveland for $199, thought it was a steal. After 3 months, they hit me with a $45 annual maintenance fee and a cancellation fee of $150 when I tried to quit. Lost $300 total and only went 12 times. Anyone else get trapped by one of these cheap upfront deals?

Oh come on, it's way worse than hidden fees at this point. @uma_martinez nailed it saying upfront deals hide the real costs because they basically make you sign a contract before you even know what you're paying. It's like buying a car and finding out the price changes after you shake hands. They count on people being too embarrassed or tired to back out once they've sat through the whole pitch. That fine print is basically a trap and they know exactly what they're doing.
