Found out I was greasing guide rails way too often
Been doing this for 8 years and always hit the rails every 3 months like clockwork. Then last month an old Schindler in a downtown Dallas building kept throwing overspeed faults and turns out all that extra grease was building up on the governor rope. Switched to a 6 month schedule on that unit and it's been smooth for 3 weeks now. Any of you guys run into problems from over-lubing?

I gotta push back on this. You said you were "greasing guide rails way too often" but honestly I think 3 months is probably still fine unless you're dumping a gallon on there each time. A little extra grease isn't gonna magically climb up to the governor rope out of nowhere if your seals are in decent shape. I see way more problems from people not lubing enough and the rails get all worn down with that dry metal on metal screech. That overspeed fault could've been a worn out governor tension or a dirty rope pulley instead of blaming the lube schedule.

Same logic as people overwatering plants thinking it helps.

Jump right in: the whole analogy hits the nail right on the head. @alice89, you're exactly right. That same overcare logic is everywhere. I've seen guys throw a whole tube of silicone caulk at a single window frame thinking it'll make the seal stronger. All it does is make a big sticky mess and maybe push the gasket out of place. Same with people dumping an entire bottle of oil into their car when the dipstick was only a tad low. It just makes things sludgy and can screw up the seals way worse than leaving it alone. More is almost never better with maintenance, it's just more chances to break something.
