An apprentice in Boston told me to always check the governor rope tension before the pit ladder, and it saved me an hour yesterday.
He said, 'The rope will tell you the real story before you even climb down,' and after finding a frayed section on a Dover unit, I realized he was right, so what's the first thing you guys check on a traction slowdown call?

Check the door lock and gibs for binding before you even touch the motor. A lot of slowdowns on those older units are just the lock dragging or a dirty guide. Saved myself a trip to the machine room more than once by finding the problem right at the car.

Oh man, @mary_foster92 is SPOT ON. I chased a slow close on a '90s Otis for a week, even had the motor half apart. Turned out to be a bent lock bracket that was just barely scraping. Cleaned the gibs with some solvent and a rag, bent the bracket back, and it was like a brand new door. Felt like a total idiot for not checking that first.

Wait a full week on a slow close? @shane_fisher37 that's brutal lol. I would've lost my mind after day two. It's crazy how often it's something simple like that, you get so focused on the big parts you forget to check the basics. Mary's totally right, always start at the door, saves so much time and backache.
