I finally chose a local printer over an online one for my flyers
I needed 500 flyers for my landscaping business launch. The online place quoted $89 including shipping. The local shop on Jasper Ave quoted $130. I went local because I could pick them up same day and check the paper quality myself. The online ones came out glossy but kind of thin. My local ones had a matte finish and thicker stock. Clients commented they felt more professional. Has anyone else stuck with a local supplier and seen a difference in how customers respond?

Paper feel really does matter, @grantmartinez nailed it.

Ink smell is such a weird thing to overlook until you get hit with it. My buddy printed up some wedding invite return envelopes and they had that same chemical stink. He was freaking out because he handed them out at a party and people literally held them away from their face. Ended up keeping them in a ziplock with baking soda for two weeks just to air them out. Paper weight is funny too, anything under like 80lb feels like you're handing someone a napkin with writing on it. Helps when the paper itself tells you it's worth picking up.

Funny you mention that, my buddy runs a food truck and he had this whole debate about his menu cards. He went with some online place for his first 200 and they came back with this weird smell, almost like chemicals or something. He was so worried customers would think it was his food. Local shop did his next batch with a soy-based ink and uncoated paper and people actually started asking where he got them printed because they liked the feel. It's funny how little things like paper weight or finish can just make a business seem more put together. Clients definitely pick up on that stuff without even knowing it half the time.
