My kitchen light switch sparked and I realized I'd been ignoring a whole section of my house.

I was installing a new pendant over the island when the old switch arced, and tracing the wiring showed the whole circuit was original to my 1978 home. I spent the next two evenings replacing every outlet and switch on that line with modern ones, which felt like a huge win. Has anyone else done a full circuit update and found other hidden surprises?

Oh man, good catch! I did the same thing in my old place and found cloth-wrapped wire behind one outlet. That little spark is a serious wake-up call to check everything.

Cloth wiring in old houses is no joke. Did you end up having to rewire the whole place after you found that, or were you able to just fix that one outlet? My friend in a 1920s bungalow had a similar scare and it turned into a huge project. That old insulation just crumbles away over time.

Forget just the fire risk, that old cloth wire can be a silent killer for your electronics. The insulation breaks down and lets in moisture, which causes weird voltage drops that slowly fry modern gadgets. We lost two computers and a TV before we figured it out. A partial rewire might not even cut it, because the whole system can be compromised. Honestly, the peace of mind from a full rewire was worth every penny.
